“There is an urgent need to create more skilled labour in the country. Unless the private sector is involved in development and education to create more skilled personnel, it would be difficult to meet this demand”

Sunil Bharti Mittal President -
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Chairman & Managing Director, Bharti Group

As India’s technology companies aggressively grow their share of the outsourcing market, India is up inst a technical talent challenge. In a country once regarded as a bottomless well of low-cost, ready-to-work, English-speaking engineers, a shortage looms. With the number of technology jobs expected to nearly double to 17 lakh in the next four years, companies are scrambling to find fresh engineering talent.

Besides the projected shortage of over 500,000 engineers in the IT segment by NASSCOM, there is an acute shortage of engineers in the other fast growth segments like Telecom, Automobiles, Aviation, Engineering, Manufacturing and Infrastructure.

In a recent CNBC - TV18's exclusive interview with Mr A.M. Naik, the Chairman and Managing Director, Larsen & Toubro, Mr. Naik pointed out - “As more and more multinationals come into the India and start off their engineering companies and more outsourcing takes place, the pressure will only increase. The situation has, in fact, not eased. It is under tremendous pressure. We are doing our best to see what we can do under these kinds of constraints.”
